During Anesthesiology, Intensive Care and Pain Medicine Elective, 5th year students attend all routine activities of the Department. Student activities are supervised by the tutors. Nightshifts during the elective is preferred for the interventions that can be performed in ICU but not mandatory.
Monday to Friday, students undertake the day-charge from the nightshift from 7:30 to 9:30. Morning visits with an infection specializt and the ICU rounds are performed till 12:00 PM.
After a brief introduction, morning visits start in the operating room (O.R.) at 8:00. Students perform certain procedures in the operation room and ICU.
Students also attend research activities during the elective. They are encouraged to join a research project that they are interested in and carry on after the elective.
Student’s knowledge, competencies including patient care, communication, and practice-based.
At the end of the elective, a 5th year medical student will have a broad understanding on the following: various activities conducted in the Anesthesiology Reanimation and Pain Department, related clinical terminology, clinical features of patients, general information about how to perform general and regional anesthesia, monitoring of the patients during anesthesia and awakening, mechanical ventilation, and organ support systems in the ICU.

Learning are observed throughout the elective.
Students will present a topic or a case at the end of the elective.
“KUSOM Clinical Performance Evaluation Form” is used for reporting.
